Written Evaluation of Coursework

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT, USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

Through in depth research of  real media text, including films such as The Warrior, The Fighter, Million Dollar Baby and Rocky as well as music videos such as Maroon 5's - One More Night, I discovered a range of different conventions that were apparent in all of the films, videos that I had researched. Some of these conventions included equilibrium, state of emotion, sporting event, success and failure. I developed the convention of a sporting event by using an extremely wide range of shots to film the main character in my film training in his local gym. By changing his outfit and using differing shots, i developed the idea of the sporting event by creating the effect that time was passing, and the character was training harder and on a frequent basis. Further more, i challenged the convention  of equilibrium by using editing techniques to give the trailer a non-linear structure. In doing so, I believe that not too much information was revealed to the audience, yet a wide  range of differing small clips were shown to 'wet' the audiences appetites and make them want to see the actual film.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATIONS OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
In my opinion, the combination of both my main product and my ancillary texts are very effective due to the consistency amongst all 3.  In both my website home page, as well as the poster and trailer, the main 'Lucky Punch' title, remains the same creating a sense of continuity and successful representation.  Further more, in my film poster, I purposely used a photograph that shows the main characters face clearly , from a low angle that also makes him appear superior to the viewer as he is higher up.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

From my audience feedback, I learnt that the editing of a trailer plays a large part in the audience understanding. In my first edit of Lucky Punch, I decided to use montage editing and lots of quick cuts in order to show a range of conventions that would represent the genre, yet ensure that I wasn't giving too much away. Due to the quick cuts and a wide range of differing shots and locations, 40% of my audience admitted that they were unsure about the narrative of my trailer and that due to the differing locations and scenes, that multiple plots could be interpreted by the viewer. In response to this, I ensured that in my final edit, a few small scenes were removed to prevent confusion and added in a few extra scenes with familiar characters from previous scenes, ensuring the viewer could follow the narrative effectively. A further thing I learnt from my audience feedback was how music plays a large part in the not only the genre but the mood and feeling of the piece. With my two song choices, one more mellow building up to a high tempo song with a strong beat. The build up of the second song choice helped heighten the equilibrium when the beat dropped and my main character punches into a phone box, glass flying everywhere and the titles appearing amongst it.

HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGY IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?

Beginning my media product with in-depth research into the genre and conventions of real sports drama films, I used the internet and YouTube to study a wide range of sports drama products such as film trailers, music videos and documentaries. Once I had gathered my research, I began to plan my film trailer and did a brainstorm of all my gathered ideas on Prezi, a cloud-based presentation software. With all my ideas gathered on one program, I was then able to evaluate and select the ideas, locations, characters and scenes that I believed would create the most successful representation of the genre. I was then able to construct a storyboard for my trailer. During these stages, Adobe Photoshop was extremely useful as i was able to express my ideas in a digital format, that I was able to easily edit and alter. I went on to use the storyboard later on during the filming stages to ensure the correct shots were used, along with lighting, costume and location.  When constructing  my trailer, i used a variety of technology in the form of my equipment. This included a Canon 4D digital camera to film the wide range of scenes, Adobe Premier to edit most of my trailer, and Final Cut Pro for the final scene using green screen and special effects to create the effect of glass shattering.  In the evaluation stages, media technology in the form of differing websites were important in gaining audience feedback in order to see where improvements could be made and what audiences felt was effective. Overall the use of media technology in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages contributed to a successful final product and representation of a sports drama trailer.

FINAL SCENE FOR LUCKY PUNCH : CHANGE OF PLAN

Due to the un-avaliable programming, I was unable to create the 3D effect of the smashed glass for the title of the film at the end of trailer to the level i wanted it to be. Brainstorming again to think of a further way to create an effective final scene, I referred back to the feedback i received from friends after looking at my First edit of Lucky Punch.

Noticing that much of the feedback included people not understanding the storyline due to the different characters and fights occuring, i decided to incorporate both the actors who had encouters with Jake in the trailer, to conclude the storyline.  Finding a video on youtube that featured super slow motion punches, i thought this would be an effective way to end my trailer as well as conclude the story-lines that people were getting confused about.

Below is screenshots from the youtube video showing the slow motion punches. Further more i have studied tutorial's  www.videocopilot.net and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly7czDvEWkg. This will not only ensure that i edit the footage and manipulate the footage to the best of my ability for the last scene but it will also ensure that it concludes my storyline and trailer in a realistic way.

POLL TO DECIPHER FILM POSTER FOR 'LUCKY PUNCH'

Under taking a poll amongst class members, friends and family,  each individual had an opportunity to look at each of the posters and then choose which one they believed was most appealing, eye-catching and representational of a boxing film. Choosing to ask a wide variety of individuals i ensured that the results weren't biased. After asking a variety of 35 individuals, i gathered the results. With a significantly larger vote for poster A, i decided to take on board the advise of my peers and use it for my film poster for my coursework brief.

REVIEW OF FIRST DAY OF FILMING

On Wednesday 15th November, I began filming for 'Lucky Punch'. I planned to shoot the two most difficult scenes first, so there was extra time incase any problems occurred.

The first scene i shot was in the car park with both Jake the main character and Angus who played an antagonist that Jake has a fight with on the stairwell of a indoor car park. Having to shoot small clips of each of the boys preceding to the fight, i decided to film the shots handheld to emphasize the idea of the street/rough atmosphere of the scene. As anticipated, i had to retake the shots a couple of times as using the camera handheld sometimes made the shot a bit too blurry and out of focus to be considered as effective and realistic cinematography. When filming the two boys meeting on the stairwell and fighting, i had to ensure this also appeared realistic. I asked both boys to scream at each other and actually act as if they were trying to hurt each other, in order to catch the realism of the situation.

The second scene i shot was in a gym in a basement. With the square room having 3 mirrored walls, it was at first extremely difficult to get the variety of shots that i intended to capture as the reflection of the camera could be seen in many of the high angle and medium shots. Planning to edit the footage into a montage showing Jake training over a period of time, i ensured he changed his costume two times to depict change in time/day. With my focus on gaining a variety of different shots, I even included shots through the mirror, tricking the eye that then panned from the reflection onto him punching the punching bag. I also included close ups in order to try and depict the pain he was going through shown through Jakes' facial expressions. Splashing water over his face, Jake looked like he was sweating more than he actually was, representing that the boxing was tiring and a strain for him. Along with the fake sweat i made sure Jake panted in an exaggerated manner, almost making the audience feel sympathy towards the character and understanding his struggle, the ideas i intend the audience to portray.

FILM POSTER FOR LUCKY PUNCH

For the film poster for the Lucky Punch i decided to follow a similar structure to that of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Analyzing different UFC posters i noticed a few common concepts that all the posters had in common. In each poster , the subjects had their hands up as if they were ready to fight.  In lots of the posters, the fighter had been photographed in such a way that shadows formed on their bodies/faces. I decided to do the same, creating a shadow effect on Jakes face. In doing so i believe it adds an element of mystery to his character and foreshadows "shady" events that might take place.  Deciding the use red and the themed color, i feel this looks extremely effective. Red commonly being a representation of blood, it makes Jake stand out even more by using blood colored silhouettes. This also foreshadows the blood shed that could occur in the trailer, enticing people to watch both the trailer and create a hype for the film.
